  Agree. To the winners belong the spoils and the opportunity to write history. However, a good and objective history course should not be just about the people who won. Even Herodotus, the father of history, 2,500 years ago described in great details the life of the Persians. Kudos to him.

  Yes every European settler's human life improved. Unfortunately, the lives of those that were abused and killed by those settlers can't make that claim.

  Believe me, I don't have an issue with history as it unfolded. I am not Indian, nor European. I am a mixture of Middle Eastern, Spaniard and American Indian. And I don't give a f*&k about any ancestry. What troubles me is the Eurocentric narrative of history of the American continent.

  I don't think I have made a single reference to Columbus being bad. It's up to the people in his time and place to make that call (Europe 15th century); same goes for the Indians. All I am saying is that he is overrated in a time where great ideas matter more than navigation skills.

  Because it's not just a matter of deeds. It's intentions that matter even more. Columbus was not interested in spreading freedom and equality for all. Such idea didn't exist yet in his time. MLK advocated and defended precisely that, freedom and equality for all.

  Yes, a segment of the population that has been screwed since time immemorial. Columbus affected the entire world, mainly the segment of the population was already at the top of the heap and open the doors to that group to intensify the use of black slaves. Columbus helped indirectly with the abuse and exploitation of the segment of the population that MLK helped in their final quest for true freedom and equality.

  MLK, hands down. I wouldn't be very enthusiastic about creating a holyday for him though. Kids need to stay in school a little longer. Government employees too need to try a little harder to earn those fat pensions that are bankrupting every government in the world.

  never a jw: You seem to be arguing for statues of perfect people or, no statues

  No Simon. I just think that Columbus is overrated. He comes from an era when might was right. And he certainly increase the might of many European nations. Today I rather see statues of people who have made great contributions to humanity. Take Alexander Fleming for example. His discovery deserves far more credit than Columbus' and I yet have to see statues of Fleming or anyone celebrating Fleming's day.

  True. That's why we credit the founding fathers of the U.S. and the French enlightenment and the English philosophers. Great ideas matter much more than braving the Atlantic. Put Columbus where he belongs: a brave and skillful explorer, nothing more. He didn't discover anything new, nor did he contribute to our freedoms and modern values. Those freedoms and values are the legacy of great European minds, but Columbus was not among them

  It has nothing to do with Columbus being racist or not, it has to do with his contributions to advancing humanity. Columbus skill as better than average explorer/navigator should be recognized, but that's it. He made no contributions to make the world a better place. Instead he opened the door to the destruction and exploitation of humans by other humans. Not necessarily his fault.

  Columbus merit is the same as that of many other brave explorers of whom most people never heard.
